My Experience with GBN

As a kid, I wanted to be the best variety and talk show host on the planet. I grew up watching late-night talkers such as “The Tonight Show,” nightly with my family. And even though the comedy aspects of those kinds of programs remain top of mind, I’ve always appreciated the interview segments. In such a short time we as the audience got to meet people from all walks of life, learned their stories, learned why their stories were important, and had a lively discussion all at once.
As a podcast host for many years, I had many opportunities to sit down with many guests to ask of their stories, but it was working with Global Book Network where I got the chance to learn more about what motivates authors and their backgrounds. As an author of seven books myself, I know that putting pen to paper is one that is challenging on so many levels. There are so many out there who desire to write a book, but for whatever reason or another, just never have the opportunity to finish their work. Because of this, sitting down with the men and women who did complete their manuscripts and passion projects will never stop being simply amazing.
During my tenure on the Global Book Network platform, I’ve been able to discuss the craft of writing with so many people from different parts of the world. Whether or not I agree with the subject matter is almost secondary to learning about the individuals who were so passionate about a subject or story that they wanted to have something in their hands they could share with others. And the most fun thing about it all is that no two subject matters are the same.
I’ve chatted with authors who wanted to show the world that a person could graduate college without student debt. I’ve marveled over discussions about what it means to be guided by faith in today’s uncertain times. There was even an episode where the author was a fine artist, and had a compendium of his works between the pages! This was especially interesting, because I always felt I didn’t have much skill when it came to that sort of thing. So while we did talk about the process of bringing the book together, it eventually evolved into a more human-to-human conversation of what art actually was and how we as people put pressure on ourselves to create art at a standard we feel is the only accepted way.
Truly fascinating stuff.
But that truly is the best part of the hosting experience for me: Being able to delve deeper into the intention of a book, the author behind the book, and the motivations behind the author. In a world where it seems were are overrun with content (and it can be difficult to find the right content you want to consume) there is drive over at Global Book Network to showcase the humans behind the tomes.
