Who doesn’t love a good ol fashioned theme party? The Southland Regional Association of Realtors (SRAR) had their 105th edition of their President and Board Bash the past weekend and I was back for my third go around as DJ. And while I enjoyed the themes of “A Night in Italy” (2023) and “Take Flight/Top Gun” (2024), there’s always something interesting about a Monte Carlo themed event. Why?

Monte Carlo themes are trickier than they seem. The reason being is that typically there’s two schools of thought of what that party should be. 7 times out of 10 (like the first picture depicted), it’s a more mid-century, Sean Connery-James Bond, throwback (which entails a certain kind of vibe), OR it’s a more EDM-forward, Formula 1 Drenched Euro party like in Ibiza or Benidorm.

Then the playlist has to be on point, because you have to basically pick songs that you assume people would associate with being in Monte Carlo, even though many haven’t been. This is why (at least for now) human DJs have an advantage over AI. Because you just can’t put up a Monaco artists playlist and call it a day. For this event, and taking the average age of the guests into account, we had a mix of French and English music, modern boss nova and sprinkled in some American Crooners and midtempo EDM. Hmm, maybe I should put the playlist here in the future.

Also, shout out to the guest of honor, who clearly has the same “Memoji” that I do. In fact, I thought the party was for me at a glance!
Either way, this opens the 2025 DJ season!
